I apologize beforehand for my imprecise non-expert's (and non-native English
speaker's) terminology.
I have decided to format the hard disk and reinstall Windows XP home edition
(with service pack 2) from my original CD-Rom, because of the presence of
some bad sectors on the HD*.
I would like to keep my previous Internet Explorer 6 History ("cronologia"
on my Italian version) even after the formatting (to be able to access it
from the toolbar of IE6): would it work to make a backup copy of the file
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Cronologia\History.IE5 before the formatting and then
substitute it in the reinstalled Windows in the same position?
Do you know some other ways of doing it?
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
*After a power outage, I found 64 kb of bad sectors on my hard disk.
Since then, I am having continual error messages, for example about
wuauclt.exe and memory "0x0f74fff8", problems with the Windows installer and
cannot access the Microsoft Update Site. I tried every method from the
Microsoft Knowledge Base to solve these problems, including using Chkdisk,
but to no avail. In your opinion, is this just a software problem, or could
my hard disk be damaged as well?
Do you know if there is some software to ascertain it?
I suppose that in any case I have to format my hard disk before reinstalling
Windows, don't I? Thank you again, and sorry for the long list of questions.
