Hi,

Help request please...

Had Freeserve Broadband set up ok on two adjacent pc's - one running Windows
98 the other Windows XP Pro.
Modem is an external Alcatel Speeedtouch USB and Broadband obtained by
plugging the modem into a USB port on one or other pc.

Couple of days ago had an XP prob, did an XP repair job and system seems to
be well, and now, although the Modem hardware and software seem to be loaded
correctly cannot get connected. Have uninstalled and re-installed a few
times without joy. When the modem is plugged into the Windows 98 machine
that continues to functions fine.

Any ideas from the following clues:-

When clicking the Speedtouch Connection Icon get the message -

STDial Up
RAS capable device (Alcatel Speed Touch USB ADSL PPP) not found
Check that your device is connected properly.
Failed to create dial-up networking entry (Alcatel Speedtouch Connection)

click ok and then get -

STD Dial up
Could not create entry (Alcatel Speedtouch Connection)

When I do Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections there is nothing
loaded in the window entitled Dial-up and Private Network Settings

and clicking Add brings up -

Network Connection
Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager
Error 711: A configuration error on this computer is preventing this
connection

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Pete

Be aware that by running that repair install of XP, you removed
XP SP1 and all critical updates, therefore leaving yourself vulnerable
to the msblaster worm and its variants. Be sure to have a firewall enabled
before connecting to the Internet again and immediately go to the Windows
Update site and install XP SP1A and all critical updates again.

Many thanks - didn't realise that XP SP1 had been removed. Re-installed them
and did get abck on line...however...
seems I have a problem with my Windows XP Pro...
When trying to boot now get:-
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the file

Having gone around the houses a few times and seem to be unable to fix
ntoskrnl and also failed to carry out a Windows Repair job I'd be grateful
if someone can advise on the following possible way of getting up and
running without loosing records from my hard drives....
I have two hard drives - C and F. Windows XP Pro is installed on C - and F
is just for backup of data.
I know I can reinstall XP from CD onto C and loose existing records there
but instead could I install a further copy of Windows XP Pro on my F drive
and then boot up from F and then get access to all my files on C. I don't
mind loosing the stuff I have on F but would like to retain files on C.
Then once I can access files on C I can take copies of all important stuff
before trying to resolve the corrupt file(s) problem.
Thanks,
Pete
