I'm about to put together my new computer (1st time, don't laugh). I
always thought that thermal compound is to be used. Neither the
instructions for the processor (Core 2 duo E6320) or the motherboard
say anything about it. There seems to be a pattern of grey matter on
the bottom of the fan where it meets the processor. Is that it? Is
that enough? Should I use something better? I'm anxious to get this
together but I want to do it correctly.

Thanks,

Joel

Yes, that's it. You can use it as is, or take it all off with lighter fluid
and follow with alcohol, then use Artic Silver, a very thin layer.

I'd use it like it is........

By no means, why should we?

Yes, just leave that stuff on as you put your heat sink on the
cpu. It's good enough.
