Welp, if it were my system, press F8 upon bootup, when you get to the menu,
choose the debugging option. If that don't work, then try to restore to
last known working version.

If those don't work, boot to safe mode, click
start/programs/accessories/system tools, then system restore. see if
there's a highlighted entry.... you'll see what I mean. If no dates are
highlighted on the left, then your next decision might be based on whether
or not you have stuff to backup on your computer because you can press F10
on boot up and do a system restore, but when I did that, it seemed to sort
of overcoat everything on the system and now I have working windows, but all
the programs I had are not on the main drive that boots up.

Anyways, if you get to the F10 option, you're supposed to boot to safe mode
first and name your My Documents folder something else that you'll remember.

hope that makes sense. If nothing else, you can call computer support for
the maker of your computer. If it's less than a year old, you can get
support for free. Even if it's more than a year old, tell them you bought
it sooner. I got tech support in India when I called yesterday.

When you Ctrl-Alt-Del, type in 'explorer' (without the quotations) in the
New Task box. That should start the program explorer.exe, which is the
application that controls your user environment (sometimes known as a
shell) - that is, your desktop, desktop icons, start menu, task bar, etc.

To find out why your explorer.exe is crashing in the first place: once (if)
your user shell loads up, go to Start, Run, and type in eventvwr and press
enter. (Or, if typing in explorer in the New Task box doesn't produce a
desktop environment, type in eventvwr as a new task). Browse the Event
Viewer entries to find information. Your explorer.exe entries will be found
under Application. It's a place to start troubleshooting.

It's also a good idea to run (as a new task if you have to, or from Start -
Run) sfc /scannow. Make sure you have your XP disk available. That might
replace a corrupt explore.exe file, if that's the source of the problem.

Good luck,
Patrick Pitre

the problem happened to me several months ago and my
problem was "msmon32.exe". dont know what it is but the
screen would be blank on boot and when i press ctrl-alt-
del i would see this prosess running. i looked for info
on this for several months and i found a lot however none
of it was in english so i used babel fish to translate it
and it basically sain it was in my registry and to stop
it immediately as at the time it was thought to be
associated with some type of virus. im not sure what
became of it but i took it out of my reg and never had
the problem again

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task Manager. Click File/New Task. Enter
the following:

C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe

and press OK. This will start the System Restore utility. Restore to a
previous time before this behavior was seen.

After the system is restored use the Administrative Tools/Event Viewer to
try and determine what happened.
