I can't use system restore - it is enabled, but in July when I tried to go
back to June it wouldn't let me even though the arrows are there at the top.
Later in the month some of the restore dates that were there went too. Now
I'm in August and it won't go back to July either - what is wrong. I've
noticed a few people seem to have found this a problem.

What do you mean it "wouldn't let you"? How far did you get in the process?
Can you give some details?

Jon

Annie;
That simply means those Restore Points are gone.
There is no way to go back to July without the Restore Points.
You will need to use a more recent point.

Many things can cause loss of Restore Points, when they are gone, they
are gone and can not be recovered or used.
Some of the things are:
Available space on hard drive
Computer usage
Space you dedicate to System Restore

If you use Real Player, try doing without it for a few days:

And others.

Annie

Why do you want to restore from June or July for that matter?

Hope this helps.

As far as I can see system restore is about restoring your "system" not
taking into account all the other changes to programmes etc.
If you haven't altered your system restore will not operate.

It is intended as a fairly short term matter, for unwinding things that
go wrong, like a faulty program installation, or one that soon wearies
on test. The classic example was 'Mommy puts right the Chaos that little
Johnny wraught this morning'

It is not a long term backup, even of the system, and is not intended
for data at all. Typically you should expect maybe 20 or 30 points, and
as these may be made when you install software or Windows Updates, that
may mean about 3 weeks. Then the space allowed fills up and the oldest
ones will drop off. At the end if you manage to keep a string of points
to become as long as 90 days, they will be dropped at that time

Thanks, but that doesn't explain why there is now only one point (yesterday -
when I last looked at it). Why does it have arrows to go back to previous
month, if they don't work, and why do the points disappear

Thanks, but there is plenty of space on the hard drive. How do I change how
much I dedicate to system restore, as far as I can see I'm dedicating the
maximum available. So why do the points go?!

Thanks for responding - the arrows at the top to go to the previous month
don't work, plus previous restore points seem to just stop being BOLD.

Annie;
Open System Restore.
Click "System Restore Settings" on the left side.
You can adjust the slider if it is not as desired.

Otherwise any number of things including the items listed on my last
post can cause loss of Restore Points.

Hopefully System Restore is not your only back-up plan.

Annie;
System Restore is a great program but as you see it has its
limitations.
If you have any important data, you need a back-up plan since System
Restore is not intended for the data you would want backed up anyways.

Well, Annie, I have the same problem. There were 3 points 2 days ago, 1 this
morning and none tonight! I have massive storage, no anti virusrunning and
they just are gone. Seems like the restore program does what it wants. I
just don't understand why they disappear. Maybe it's a new feature!
