I am only user of my XP Pro and I am administrator. I have been using
XP for 20 days now, and each boot up has been rapid with no
interventions.

Now suddenly it stops at the welcome screens, requiring me to choose a
user of which there is only one - namely me.

Why did this happen out of the blue? How can I eliminate it?

Thanks

Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 Uncheck Users must enter
a username and password. Click Apply and provide the requested information.

Hi, I might suggest you download and install TWeakUI for
XP, There is a setting there for automatic logon and you
can set it for who you like to auto logon. I,m sure
someone will have the time to solve this problem, but
this is the simplest for now.

TweakXP did it. Thanks.

Now if I can only remember to do that when this 'up jumped the devil'
hic-cup happens again! Should I ask how this happened in the first
place?

As long as you enter the correct information when you were prompted for a
username and password, i.e. the user name you wanted automatically logged
on, and left the password (in this case) blank, it should have logged you on
to that account. This setting in CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 does the same
thing and changes the same settings as the Autologon feature of TweakUI.
