You need to check these registry settings as well, something may have set
these (assuming you are an Administrator and no-one has seet a Group Policy
to set this):
Just check these registry keys in Regedit for the following settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSimpleStartMenu"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"ForceClassicControlPanel"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"LogonType"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"WebView"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"ClassicShell"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000
You can copy and paste above into notepad and save as something.reg that
will disable classic so hopefuly it will go to the only other which is xp
Jason,
My first reaction was to send you to an advanced system menu to check
settings there, but I think that might only be a band-aid solution. If
you have any virus scanning software, run a system scan, and also any
adware/spyware scanning software. If you don't have either, you
probably at least are familiar with Symantec and McAfee, but here is a
link to a discussion about some alternatives:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/Viruses/Q_21779967.html.
I personally use and recommend Spybot for ad/spyware
(
http://www.spybot.info), and also Ad-Aware by Lavasoft
(
http://www.lavasoft.de). There are many more of these, but there are
also a lot of fakes that are really ad/spyware, so I would steer clear
of any you aren't completely sure of.
If that doesn't help (which, lets face it, I hope it doesn't, for your
sake. messed up settings are preferable over viruses any day!) I can
walk you through checking the system performance settings.
