Hello,

Is there a way to prevent the annoying gray popups at the router? Are IT
people use the net send command to notify that a server is being rebooted
etc...We have a cisco router is there a port we can close for these pop ups?
Thanks in advance.

John

You can disable udp 137/138 and that should cover it. As previously posted,
you can also stop the messenger service if you don't need that for anything
else. :)

Brian,

Thanks we'll try this. Yes we need to the messenger service to keep
running so we can use net send commands to workstations within the LAN.

I think you misunderstood, if you disable the ports as mentioned , it is the
same thing as stopping the messenger service.

I think you misunderstood. If you disable the ports at the point of
connection to the Internet, then Messenger Service works fine within the
LAN. Hence, closing off the appropriate ports at the router will allow
Messenger Service to operate fine within the LAN, but will block all
incoming nastygrams sent to it.

Of course, what's really necessary is to block _all_ ports, and then start
opening up only the ones that you need.

Alun.
