Hi guys,

i got two PCs running XP-pro connected to an adsl-modem/router to
share broadband, ones using usb and the other through ethernet (this
modem has both 1xusb and 1xethernet port).DHCP is enabled.

Both computers can surf the Net together but can't share files between
them or play games(sometimes the game can see the other pc's ip but
its unreachable), this is the problem.

I can ping computer XYZ by name but instead of pinging its ip
address(192.168.1.4)it pings 192.168.1.1 which is the router/gateways
ip. Likewise when i ping this pc on the other side, it wont ping
192.168.1.3 but 192.168.1.1. wHAT am i doing wrong here?

If you have a firewall in place this will stop you from doing so. Within a lan enviroment firewalls cannot be used on the local machines. Firewalls are usually designated on the router to protect you from the outside world

Try pinging between the two machines to see if they can see eath other that way
To ping do the following
Click Start/run and type in cmd. Then hit ok
In the command prompt type in ping 192.168.1.3 (assuming you are on computer192.168.1.2
Also , make sure you are on the same workgroup
If they can ping each other try this
Click start and then run and type in the following
\\192.168.1.3 (assuming you are on 192.168.1.2
Then try it the other way around from the other computer
Do the shares open ? Any errors? If so, please post them. But most important make sure you uninstall any firewalls you have in place. Also make sure that the XP firewall is disabled as well. To learn how to do this, go to help and support and type in disable ICF for your search.

You will need to connect both computer via NIC.

hi ron,

firewall is off, i even switch off zone alarm(not uninstall) on both
machines. I ping the computers name, it doesnt ping its ip but the
routers (192.168.1.1)

for example: c:\ping abc
It pings not 192.168.1.4 but 192.168.1.1

In MY NETWORK PLACES, THE pc can be seen but cannot be accessed..
