Hi Everyone, I'm new to this newsgroup, so I hope I am doing this right. I
recently purchased 2 Sherp YO-290P Personal PDAs for my middle school age
children. Everyone had them, so they had to have one as well. In looking
into downloads for a Homework Scheduler/organizer, I realized how uneducated
with PDAs I am. What are the differences in all these things I keep seeing,
I have no idea what to download, there is Palm OS, Pocket PC, and more.
However none of these things say to us novices, "Hello, down load me for
your Sharp YO-290P. Can someone help me, and inform me on what I have here,
so I'll know what to look for.

Feeling really stupid here!

I just went through your manual
(http://www.sharpusa.com/files/org_man_YO_290P.pdf), and I see nothing
about the ability to download any programs for this unit. I think it
uses a proprietary OS; that the manual doesn't seem to mention the OS at
all probably supports this. Seeing it for sale online for $19.99 makes
me think it's not going to be as versatile as a real Palm or something of
that nature.

In regards to the Sharks reply:
"proprietary OS"
proprietary: something that is used, produced, or marketed under exclusive
legal right of the inventor or maker; specifically an (O)perating (S)ystem
Didn't mean to step on your fin Shark.

You didn't. I said that I thought the OS was a "Sharp thing", and that
he was probably limited to what came with the PDA. I see no conflict.

The Sharp YO-290 will not download software. It has a fixed memory and
won't run any other programs. Even if it did, there is no true touch
screen to run them. (MY neighbor has one.) It's a personal digital
assistant, but it is *not* a handheld computer like a Palm Pilot, Sony
Clie, HP Jornada, etc., and the price ($20-30 vs. $200 and up) certainly
reflects that.

even the sharp website does not tell you what operating system it uses, it is
definately NOT PocketPC, it looks like a custom version of linux.
