hi,

I have cable connection at home, and a wireless network. My desktop
has both wireless card and Ethernet card, laptop has Ethernet card
build-in but no wireless. I would like share desktop's internet
connection with the laptop by connecting them together via a router.

Here the setup: The desktop is online via its wireless card to the
main house router, I connect a second router to the Ethernet port of
the desktop, and the laptop attached to the second router as well. But
when I tried to setup sharing the internet connection from desktop's
network connection window, I got the msg says the desktop ip should be
'192.168.0.1'. which is already occupied by the house router.

Any suggestion on the right settings for both computers?

machine specs:
Windows XP pro on Dell Dimention Desktop, Netgear Wireless and 3com
Ethernet cards
Windows 2k pro on IBM thinkpad T23 laptop, Intel Ethernet Card

You shouldn't have to change any settings....

If you have your modem connected to the wireless router, it broadcasts at
least 3 signals throughout the house, allowing three distinct systems to
share an internet connection with 3 distinct IP addresses. Everything,
therefore, should be configured and as long as both of your computers are on
the same workgroup, the shared files/resources should be present. What I
would suggest is a simple network setup disk created on your desktop to
carry over to your laptop. You might be confusing your laptop by
broadcasting two different signals via two different routers. If you
configure your desktop as a residential gateway, however, that should fix
the problem. This would be a solution when you do not have the ability to
uplink the internet connection via the wireless router.

Make sure to plug both the laptop and desktop into the main router and set
up the workgroups from there. After that, you should be able to unplug them
from the router and share uplink connection, files, and resources without
difficulty.

Ideally you'd want to connect both PCs to one (the same) router. Why can't
you connect your laptop to the router you already have? If that isn't
convenient for you then get a wireless card for your laptop.

oh

i just purchased this laptop and didn't have wireless card yet, i live
in a household and the main router is kinda of inconvenient to access
all the time

since i have an extra router, so i just played around to see if i could
set up the sharing that way from my own room

now, i got the wireless card for the laptop, so not a problem anymore

thanks for the suggestion, i still want to figure the sharing part out
though :-)
