I am actually to the point of crashing the computer and starting it up
again...this would mean the loss of TONS of hours worth of work...
I have several programs on the add and remove list that will not come off.
AND several of these will neither install...or uninstall....they will only
allow "maintaince" ....I get the screen that says maintainence is
complete..and nothing.
I have gone to the xp help site which explains how to manually remove
them...tired...failed... I have recently{tonight} contacted the originators
of the software. Some of the programs are Stronghold, by firefly. Star wars
Galatic Battlegrounds the Clone Wars, CSI...
any ideas?
I have read several of the threads thoughout here and i believe i have tired
everything i can....but you all are so helpful...
and i have a million questions...

When you said you went to the xp help site, did you mean the Microsoft help
site? Here is the microsoft article on how to manually remove Add/Remove
entries. However, it involves messing around with the Registry. If you are
not comfortable in doing so, you need to back up it up first because
deleting the wrong setting could totally mess up your computer. Here is the
article:

Try CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ It is freeware with no spyware.
Install and run. Click on Tools then highlight the offending entry. Click on
Run uninstaller. If the entry remains highlight it and click on Delete
Entry.

formatting a disk will only result in loss of work if you havent bothered to
backup data.

Sometimes reinstalling an app will then allow you to uninstall it.
You dont make it clear as to whether these apps are still on your sys, ie
visible in explorer

Why do you want to uninstall the programs? If the programs don't take up
huge amounts of hard drive space, no problem, right? Certainly not worth
taking the risk of damaging your operating system installation and perhaps
loosing data. And you can also just delete the directory for a game program
if it is huge compared to the free space on your hard drive(s). You can
delete any desktop icons and entries in your 'Start' menu and just forget a
standard 'remove program' proceedure. Don't worry, be happy. You will
never notice a difference between doing it the "right way" and the "easy
way". Now if the programs were more tightly integrated into the operating
system, MS Word, for example - now that is different. But you don't have
that problem.

Everyone who works closely with computers has a 'million questions'. There
a just too many details and interactions. The main thing to learn is what
is safe to do and what isn't; what is worth doing and what isn't; and most
important, what not to worry about.
