I need guidance in selecting what processor to choose when buying a new
laptop. Its use will be mainly for email and internet browsing, so my
budget will lie in the $600-range. The last one I bought a couple of years
ago was a Celeron M with 1.6 (or 1.4?) GHz; and it is really too slow, esp.
when I'm accustomed to my desktop with an overclocked Mobile Barton (2.41
GHz). I really like the 15.4 inch screen. AMD has served me well in the
past, but so has Intel; so I am not leaning toward any specific name, just
performance. Will be using XPPro, hopefully, unless there is a big
difference in price. Then, it will be XP Home. Thank you for help in
selecting. sdlomi2

Try for XP Pro since it will be supported longer, or get a
computer with a coupon for a free VISTA upgrade.

Checkout the on-line sites, www.dell.com and others to see
what is available in the $600 range.

Worry more about the RAM and hard drive speed than the CPU.
Bottlenecks are hard drive cache, FSB and Internet
bandwidth. Not enough RAM will cause slower performance as
the hard drive will be used for virtual memory more and that
is slower.

Get lots of RAM, a hard drive with lots of cache. A good
video card can be on-board, but a good card will speed up
the video and not tie up your system RAM.

Consider spending up to $1,000, there is a noticeable
difference in that $400.
