I have Powerpoint 2002 and am trying to make four text boxes in my slide
master, positioned in a very specific way.

I want to be able to change the text on each New Slide that I create, but
have the text boxes appear automatically as the default one does from the
Master Slide. How do I create a new "Object Area for Autolayouts" so that it
will appear on each slide as "Click to add text" with the dotted line around
it?

I have tried everything but am unable to figure out how to do this. When
clicking on the task pane to apply a new slide layout, how can I get four
colums, and how can I make these be my Master Slide?

Your help would be greatly appreciated,

Mark Hudson

You can not create new Placeholders. You MUST use the ones provided in
PowerPoint. You can move them around, but you can't create new ones.

Bill thank you kindly for your reply. You confirmed my suspicions regarding
this. Do you know if there is functionality to do this in the newest version
of PowerPoint? Any third party tools that would let me force a new
Placeholder Object into the master, or that would create an Object under
Insert Object... that would allow me to do this?

Unfortunately you can't do this. A recommended work around would be to
create a slide and format it with dummy text set up the way you want. Then
duplicate the slide whenever you need that layout, and edit the text.

To quote John Langhans of Microsoft:

"If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that this capability
can/should be improved in PowerPoint (without have to resort to an add-in
or VBA), don't forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also why it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

It has not changed in the latest version. You could create a slide in your
template that has the boxes where you want , then each time you need to use that
particular slide, just copy it into position

Hi Mark,

PowerPoint does not have the capability of creating/adding custom
placeholders to the slide master and/or creating/adding customer slide
layouts which would take advantage of such custom placeholders. With
multiple master feature in PowerPoint 2002 and 2003 you can create a
variety of almost identical slide masters with different behaviors
(animations) and placement of title and object areas for AutoLayouts so
that when used in conjunction with the existing autolayouts you can get
some additional flexibility. When that is still insufficient you can also
create slides that are laid out and formatted the way you want and then you
can use the Duplicate Slide command (or just copy/paste) to make a new copy
of the slide each time you need to create a slide that uses the same
layout/formatting.

Of course, if you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly that
some kind feature for creating custom placeholders and/or slide layouts
should be a built-in feature in PowerPoint, don't forget to send your
feedback to Microsoft at:

I'm afraid you can't create new AutoLayouts, and you can't add new "click
here" objects to existing ones.

You can, however, create a sample slide laid out the way you want it, then
copy it as many times as needed, then edit the copies.
