Help recover "Unknown Account"

I need to recover a user profile that was "orphaned" when
the user left and then rejoined a domain.

I can see the profile in the User Profile list, but it
listed as "unknown account". When I select the correct
account the "copy to" option is grayed and I am unable to
copy the profile to the new domain user profile.

In windows explorer I can see that the old account has
been renamed "Documents and Settings\USER.DOMAIN.000"

Is the SID gone? Is there any way to restore this
profile?
