HELP: problems with shortcuts on desktop

Whenever I place ANY shortcuts onto my desktop they don't work.
Then, when I try to delete them, I get an error message saying that they are
write-protected or that the disk is full.
This only started happening recently.
I now have several "shortcuts" that don't work, and which I can't remove, on
my desktop.
I am also concerned that this may be a symptom of something potentially
catastrophic.
Can anyone help!?

It could not harm scanning this machine for viruses and other malware.
