Few printers have a printable margin that is uniform on all four sides. Most
of the ink/bubble jet printers have significant non printable areas at the
top and bottom. A few later models have an edge to edge printing
capability. This mode may help, yet it has some problems as well. Generally
the mode is used for pictures only, since the various tolerances require
that the picture slightly overlap the paper to avoid a possible white edge.
Edge to edge printing of test would likely cut off a portion of the first
and last character in a line.
To possibly solve your problem, the non printable areas on your particuliar
printer must be known. Then, The margins must be adjusted so that the
printing from an application does not overlap into the non printable areas.
Paper feed may also play a part, The paper position may vary, depending upon
the paper itself. Some printer actually find the leading edge of the paper,
and adjust if necessary. Others just feed the paper, and assume that it is
in position.
The thickness and texture of paper will have an effect on how well the paper
feeds to a unifom position.
If the edge gudes are set too tight or too loose, the paper may have a small
misalignment, and the printing may be at a slight slant to the edge of the
paper.
