Help, pls-something's gone bad- but what?

I'm trying to pinpoint what maybe causing my pc's woes- Afer a short time,
it seems to just 'crap out'- disk drive light goes on, stays on...no
response to keys, nothing. I'll shut down and attempt to restart- sometimes
it will, other times it will not start up... I've swapped out power supply,
cleaned and re-seated connecters... no luck... anyone have an idea what it
may be? Intel 815EEA mobo, XP... I'll try the CPU and then memory next...

get some temperature readings on your cpu
to make sure it;s not overheating...

is the cpu fan spinning freely?
 
Yes.. fan is spinning, temp is fine also per Intel's software monitor... we
have a cpu fan, p/s fan, and case fan- all going- case was left open as well
this last time... ...

have you checked the software yet ? - or Hard drive ?
 
I'd like to check the hard drive... any suggestions how? If the HD was ng,
would it cause the pc to go black, or would it simply be inaccessible?

Have you tried updating your video driver?
 
As far as I know, I have the latest video driver... XP is usually very good
about this... would that cause the screen to go black and the HD's led to
remain on.. as well as it to not respond to key/mouse?

I could check, that is if I can get it to run again, and roll back the video
driver to a previous one..
