40 Gig WD Caviar drive died- it spins, but not data...

Bios doesn't see it even when I hook it up as a slave in another computer...

Are there companies here in the states one can send it to that someone here
can recommend...

thank you...

(Not sure if it matters at this point, but it was running XP Home...)

Go to the Western Digital support site at:

http://support.wdc.com/download/

and download the "Data LifeGuard Diagnostic Utilities" first. The
software might be able to repair the drive.

No good...

The drive is clicking.. not a good sign..

Seems data recovery is my only choice.. anyone know of a company they've
dealt with here in the states?

Maybe you could get another 40G Cav on ebay and remove the known good ctrlr
board and put it on ur bad one.

I dunno, but i heard that most of the times when drives fail its the pcb
mounted on the drive that is bad.

i just looked on ebay and there are allot up for auction. I could get one
deliverd to your house for 20~30 bucks.

that would be a cheap fix if it worked. and if it dont work you wont be out
anyting. u'll still have a good 40G hdd to use as a secondary hdd.

good luck,
