i have done a system restore here and nove of my data is
present. all the files are but theres nothing in them.
anyone know how to help?

Hi,

Please provide a little more background information:

1) What type of data ?
2) Where is this data ?
3) Why did you do a system restore ?

You could try going into safe mode (press F8 key several
times before Windows logo appears) and checking your files.

Regards,

Tim

Thanks for this...
The problem started last night when i added a user
account. at that point my main administrator account
just disappeared! i thought "i'll just go back 24 hrs, i
wont miss any of todays data additions". and so i have.
but theres no data in my folders and allmy favorites and
outlook email has gone. the data was all sorts of office
docs, web sites etc.
thanks again

You can do an unrestore in the system restore window to
get back to what you did wrong. I'm not very technical and
I can't seem to get a system restore back to get before my
problem, but at least you can get back to where you were.

It's normal for the built-in Administrator account to disappear when
another user account is added. Most folks create a second account in the
administrator group and reserve the built-in Administrator account for
troubleshooting.

You can still log on to that account after it disappears by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+Del two times at the welcome screen. Type in the user name
and password for that account when prompted.

You have a few choices to get back your "stuff":

- Copy your old account data to the new account
How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811151

If you lose access to some of the files or folders, see this article:
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

- Keep the old account. Use TweakUI for XP to place it back onto the
Welcome Screen. TweakUI is one of the Power toys for XP. The current
version available for downloading is *only* for XP with SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

NOTE: If you take this route, you may want to create and keep on hand a
second Administrator account for troubleshooting.

Err, no he can't. The reason there's nothing there is because -
surprisingly - there's nothing there! When you add a user account, the main
Administrator account (which should *NOT* be used for day-to-day operation
because, if you bugger something up under the main Admin account it's a
bigger problem - like if you forget the password for example) disappears.
All the data is still there, most likely (if we're talking documents) in
<root>:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Administrator's Documents. A
search could also be made for the name of one of the missing files. Imagine
the drive as a filing cabinet and the different user accounts as the
drawers. You store papers in a file in one drawer, they're not automatically
going to be available in any other drawer, unless you copy them.
