I recently bought a copy of Harry potter and the chamber of secerets. It installed onto my computer without any trouble. However when i go to load up the game i get this message :

General Protection fault!

History:appInit

Does anyone Know how i can get this game to work? Im not amazingly handy with a computer so im going to need a step by step guide. Thanks.

System:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home edition
Version 2002
Service pack 3

Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz
3.06 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Not sure if this is the right section.

welcome to PCR

General Protection faults are usually, but not solely attributed to, a memory problem.

If you only have 512mb ram installed on your PC, as indicated, you are actually throttling the operating system to start with. XP really could do with a gig of ram (1024mb)

I would first add more ram, if you are not sure how, get a good friendly PC shop to do it for you. I wouldn't go to PCWorld, not 'cos they can't, but because they'll extort a rip-off fee for doing so ... although you could ask them, how much for ram & fitting, then ask us to see if it is reasonable. ;)

Do you know what graphics card is fitted to your PC?

Im not too sure about the graphics card, how do you check :S?

Do you have any idea how much it would cost to get the RAM fiited?

I really dont want to pay to much to play one game. Is there no other way i can play this game without having to buy anything for my computer. Thanks for the information much appriciated.

EDIT: How can my computer run games such as FM 2010 but not HP? surly FM takes up more memory?
