I have XP Home and a couple of days ago my computer started rebooting
and wouldn't stop. Now I think I may have COMPLETELY messed up. I got
it into safe mode and tried to do a repair and it didn't work, so I did
a complete reinstall and now ALL of my programs and very important files
are GONE! Someone, please tell me there is a way of getting them back!
Is there a program I can go buy? At this point I'm totally freaking
out!

Angela

What do you mean by gone. Can you see the program directories on the disk
or did you format during the install? If you formatted the drive they are
gone.

If you performed a clean install this would have deleted everything on the hard drive.

You may need to look around on the internet for disk recovery services who specialize in this type of recovery. These services are usually able to recover deleted files depending on how long it has been since they were deleted.

Ronnie, Thanks for the response. It just happened today and I DID format
the drive. I guess I am just going to have to take it to someone that
knows how to get the information back, if it's even possible.

I am ssure a google search will bring up a few programmes to
do what you want - in varying degrees - depends on how
valuable the info was

this search was OK

Don't despair!
I see some people say all is lost. Not true.
Happened to me, and I used some free programmes and some not free like
"Recover my files" but it costs little. Can't remember them all but you
can Google for it look mainly for apps. that recover files after a
format.
MOST IMPORTANT, DO NOT USE THE EXISTING HARD DRIVE If you can!!!
Get a new one put your system on it, and connect the old one as a
slave!!!
Put the recovery applications on the new one as well, and when you run
them save everything onto the new one. I have recovered 98% of my lost
files, after an huge crash AND format, and I am not a recovery expert.
It takes time and patience, Most important Use the old drive as little
as possible, definitely as little writing to it as possible !!!

And just a helpful remark, reinstalling the system should be the very
last resort, yes I know it's too late for you, but remember it for
next time.
If it happens again you can always start from a standalone Linux CD,
save all your important data and then you do a reinstall.
Good luck.

Thanks! I just checked the protected recycle bin and there are 596 files
in there but as far as I can tell they are all system files. Can you
recommend any certain programs? I am using another computer that I have
right now

Hi!
What you see in the recycle bin is recent stuff.
I did recover the files using the "Recover my files" application. Fro
memory, you can download a trial version, which lets you look at th
drive and recover small files, up to a certain size. Maybe it will wor
for you as is, if you haven't lost large files, might not even have t
buy it. At any rate it will show you what can be recovered, making th
decision easier.
What I actually did; I downloaded the recovery programme on
different computer, and put it on a pen drive, and ran it from there
Can't emphasize enough how important it is not write any more to you
old drive, until you finished recovery. You can run the comp. OK a
long as you do not connect to the net and install anything, and sav
nothing on the HD.

I can sense you are not exactly Bill Gates when it comes to experience
nothing wrong with that! but beleive me you can do it, "IF" you ar
careful and patient, if you have someone close by with more experienc
it probably would be helpful, on the other hand, maybe not because
some helpers tend to be impatient and rush things.
Good luck

Hi agian! Thanks for all your advise. You're right, Bill Gates I'm not
Everything I know, I taught myself through trial and error. I wen
yesterday and bought a new hard drive and the Recover my Files program
The only thing I've downloaded are Norton 6 and then the Windows update
from Microsoft. Now I guess I'll pray for a miracle, or at least som
guidance to not mess up anything else.
