Hi,

Not sure if this is the right group but I am hoping that someone can
help me with this.

Recently bought a New Computer, which was described as.
"128Mb of PC2100 266Mhz DDR Memory. Motherboard takes up to a maximum
of 1Gb of Memory. AMD Pro2200+ Processor, 40 Gb Hard drive - etc etc."

Having installed my OS, when I go to my computer and look at
properties I get the following.

Mobile AMD Duron
850MHz
96.0 MB of RAM

Is This Right??
Have I done something wrong - or is the guy who sold it to me pulling
a fast one??

Sounds like you've been ripped off Karen, sorry to tell you. If you're using
some flavour of windows download and run CPU-Z, it'll tell you for sure what
you have.

Karen, that system is trash. Typically only junk boards from the likes of
PCChips (or one of their alias's) will include a Duron and call it an "AMD
Pro(nnnn)+", and it's extremely likely it also includes a very poor case
and power supply.

Because the motherboard is so integrated, and the CPU so slow, low-powered
relative to a decent modern system, the power supply may work fine for a
time, but expect problems, including fan failure and eventual parts
damage. So far I haven't even delved into the substantial performance
disadvanages of this all-integrated Duron combo.

If I were you, I would immediately demand a refund, based on the fact that
the system is: A) Not set up correctly B) Deceivingly marketed...
AMD Calls their chips Athlon or Duron, it's the deceptive practice of
PCChips et al that have caused your CPU to be called an "AMD Pro2200+",
which is a deliberate attempt to trick customers, regardless of the common
practice of a seller simply repeating what "PCChips" calls it. It's a
similar deception to when someone buys a generic power supply labeled as a
400-550W unit, which is only worth 250W, even if the system only needed a
GOOD 250W power supply... it just artificially makes the specs seem good
towards the end of maximizing profit on the lowest-end junk systems.

If I were guessing, I'd guess the price on the combo was too good to be
true, that is, priced below the floor possible for a decent system.

Sorry to say, but you were ripped off.
Hi Dave, (and everyone else),

Thanks for your help. Have been in touch with the company concerned,
they have offered to upgrade my computer (at no cost) to the Elite
L7VMM3 motherboard with a Pro2500+ processor (which is a Duron 1600
running at 1.6Ghz with a front side bus of 200Mhz).

Is this a better spec/deal. What do you think!!!

Thanks

Karen

Might be worth 2 pounds more, but is still relatively slow for a modern
system and doesn't address the quality of the power supply. At least it's
better than having the situation you're currently in, but only you can
decide if that's what you wanted, worth the money spent.
