OK here goes, the computer tech in charge of windows 2000
server with 10 computers using terminal server was asked
to leave. The 2000 server software that was been used is
not a legal copy and license issues are causing some
problems.
I have been asked to resolve this problem and my idea is
to purchase a legal copy of 2000 server with 10 CALS.
My question is how do I go about making this server legal
without a lot of down time. Do I have to reinstall?

Please help with any suggestions on a quick and easy fix
but the end result has to be with a legal install for 10
computers using terminal server.

I'm kind of new at this so any help is greatly appreciated

Just purchase the licenses you need, so if you get audited you can show that
you have a vaild license for everything you're using. I wouldn't bother
chainging anything.

If you MUST install the legal copy, by company mandate, or by BSA mandate,
do the following:

1. Full backup w/ system state & image backup (if available) using a
program like Ghost.
2. Boot from Windows Server CD w/ integrated current SP level
3. Choose Install option (not Repair)
4. When it recognises your current installation do NO choose new
installation, but rather choose repair option.
5. Windows will recache the installation, retain all programs & accounts
but WILL prompt for the installation key, which is what you want to change.

This process takes about an hour, and should be scheduled during
non-business hours.

Just out of curiosity, were you having technical
problems? An illegal license should work just as well as
an illegal one. :)

A message came up one of the workstatons saying that the
terminal server license would expire soon

TS comes with an unlimited number of 30 day trial
licenses. This would happen with a legit copy of 2k
server, just no TS licenses purchased.
