I want to partition my disk to dual boot both.
When i open diskpart in the command prompt i can not partition my drive as
if i select the correct disk it states there is a size of 298gb but free
space is zero.
But in actual fact there is 277 gb free.
What am i missing here, why does it state zero bytes free and what is the way
to put it right.
thank-you.

It is not free space it is used by the partition. For
example there is 298gb in the partition. One needs to
reduce the size of the partition, then you will have free
space.

peter.... - Terminology can be confusing - "free space" indicated by My
Compuer disk properties refers to space included in the partition but not
currently being used.
"Free space" referred to by Diskpart, or other disk partitioning utilites,
refers to space not designated as part of a partition.

The point is when i clicked on shrink volume it stated "no kb"...(not mb or
gb) kb.
so i could not shrink the volume ...c drive to partition it so what i did
was reinstalled vista and low and behold i could then make a new partition
and i was able to dual boot vista and win 7.
