Help, please...

On a pretty good/new Win XP system, why can't Windows Explorer move or copy
a 4.3 Gb file to another drive that has 18 Gb of empty space? It says
"Error copying file or folder. Cannot copy it. There is not enough free
disk space."

I also tried to use the 2xExplorer (shareware utility), but got the same
results.

Thanks, gurus.

Since XP can only use 4 GB of RAM and the file is bigger
than that and you probably don't have more than 1 GB, you'll
need to increase your virtual memory to 5 GB so the file can
be read into some form of memory so it can be moved.

Do you mean that I need to install 5 Gb of RAM ? DUDE ! ! ?

I've got only 512 Mb.

Or, can I create a 5 Gb virtual memory "partition?" on another disk?

You are trying to put the file on a partition/drive that is formatted as a
fat32 file system. There is a 4 gig limit with that file system. Convert the
drive to NTFS and you will be able to copy the file over. Then delete it
from the original partition.

If the drive you're moving to is Fat32, it's not going to work. You're over
the file size limit for Fat32.

Virtual memory is space set aside on the hard drive for the
computer to use when the tasks exceed the available
installed RAM. You don't need to buy anything, it is a
setting. As others have also said, you need to be using
NTFS if you aren't already.
see http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm for info on virtual
memory

You can convert the FAT32 drive to NTFS. Go to Help and Support and do a
search for the word 'convert' . You will have instructions on how to make
the change. This is non destructive and will not cause data loss (99.9999%
of the time) however it is prudent to backup important data first.
Conversion from FAT32 to NTFS is a one way street. You can't convert from
NTFS back to FAT32 without third party software.
