My new Pioneer DVDR-106D arrived today. I was advised to make the
writer the secondary master and the DVD ROM the secondary slave.

I hooked it up that way. When I booted nothing was recognized. I have
to HDD, one as primary master and one as primary slave. I checked the
jumpers on both DVDs and they were set according to the instructions
that came with them. I checked the cable to MOBO connection, I checked
the power supply connections. Everything was tight.

I unplugged the DVD writer and left the setup as it was before getting
this writer (DVD ROM on secondary master). Nothing recognized.

I unplugged the DVD ROM (and writer) and both HDDs were recognized.

I went into the BIOS and made sure everything was set as Auto.

The IDE cable worked with the DVD ROM using it. The only thing I can
think of is slave part of the IDE cable may not work and is causing
the other problems.

I am at a loss. Can anyone help? Thank you.

In the BIOS change from Auto to user and press the Enter key on all
the drives and save on exit and see if that cures it?

I just tried it. The user part was just included for the HDD. There
were other options (CD ROM, MO, Other ATAPI devices) but I just
changed them all to user HDD. It still didn't recognize any drives.

Thanks Shep.

Change the Cdroms drives to Cdrom drives :)
Then are they seen by POST e.g on the loading screens?

I had a similar problem and cured it by removing the motherboard battery,
leaving it for 30 minutes and replacing it and then everything was recognized
correctly. I expect you will get a checksum error, so enter the BIOS and reset
everything as you want it. If you're unfamiliar with your BIOS and its settings,
before doing this you should make a note of your present settings.

Thank you sb. Can I simply apply the default settings instead of
writing it all down?

You don't need to do this.Just pull the power cord and use the Clear
Cmos jumper. However OP should still try setting the hard drives and
Cdroms to user and press the enter key and save one exit so that they
are all seen what they are.

If I was a light bulb I would register .0000005 watts.

You'll never believe this but I plug the IDE cable into the DVD writer
upside down. Yep that's how intelligent I'm getting.

I do appreciate your time for stirring up my pea brain!

Y'all have a good night.

Thanks.
