I can'r send/Receive mail. I can't delete messages from the "Sent" file. When
I try to do so, I am getting a pop up meddage 9error?) saying something to
the fact that the PST file is full and that I need to delete some items.
However, the system doesn't allow me to access the file in order to
accomplish it. How can I proceed. Right now I am deas in the water....
Thank you,
Ed

Thanks a bunch, Oliver. I appreciate your help. I'll try it when I come home
and report the result here.

Hi Oliver,
Well I tried, and failed. I followed the instructions to the letter:
Extracted the pst2gb.exe file, selected the oversized file location. I then
created a name and location for the truncated file and saved it. Then I
pressed Start and received the following message: "The program encountered
problems. Check the file names and try again."
I tried different file names and different locations with the same result...
I can't figure out what's wrong. I also tried it on different computers with
the same result. Any idea what i am doing wrong? (yes, the file names are
legal!)
Thanks,
Ed

Dear Ed,

at first another website with further (more) information:
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/repair2gbpst.asp

If you can open the PSt file, you can try to delete emails with
"Shift+Delete".

This will delete the emails direcly and do not move this into the "Deleted
items" folder.

Try to delete single emails, with big attachments (where you know the
sender, so he could send it to you again) . If you can delete some huge
emails, compress the PST file:

"How to compact the personal folders (.pst) files in Outlook "
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291645/en-us

Maybe it helps.

Hi Oliver.
I'll check the other site and let you know how it worked. The other options
are not feasible since the system doesn't allow me to open any file. All I am
getting is an error message.
However, it seems like your original message regarding "2gbpst" does work. I
tried it on another computer and I am going to execute it on the ailing
computer when I get there. I'll let you know the results.
Thanks,
Ed

Thats because its designed to work on a ansi, pre 2003, data file and you
have a unicode file

Hi DL,

with a unicode PST he would not get the limitation of 2GB, so I think he use
Outlook 2003 with an old ansi PST.

Actually he's using a unicode pst, according to properties of the Personal
folders
ie The format shows as 'Personal folders' wheras as I understand it an ansi
file would show as 'Personal Folders 97 -2002'
He further stated this was a clean installation of OL2003, and not an
upgrade of an earlier version or data file.
Unfortunately he allready has a prior thread running in another OL group

Hi Oliver,
1) How can I change, or tell, one from the other (Unicode PST, or not?)
2) As to the present problem, I sort of resolved it with the suggestion of
someone to just go ahead and change my mail profile. Then, transfer only the
mist important files (Contacts, Calander, Tasks.) Since the problem was an
excessive size of "Sent" mail, the problem was resolved.
I was also led to believe that if Icreate a new profile in Outlook 2003, the
new one would be a Unicode PST. However, as I said above, I don't know how to
tell one from the other.
Thank you very muchfor your willingness to help!
Ed

Hi DL,
I don't quite understand your statement: "Unfortunately he allready has a
prior thread running in another OL group." You are the one who suggested I
post in another group, didn't you? I just followed your suggestion...
Regardless, thanks for spending so much time with trying to help me. i did
learn features I wasn't aware of. Please, see also my response to you in the
other group.
Thanks again,
Ed

Hi Ed,

in Outlook go to "File/Datafilemanagement" doubleclick on your "Personal
Folders", then you normally should see the Path of the PST file (location)
and the "Format" (Outlook 97 - 2002, ansi) or (Outlook 2003, unicode)

Maximum size of a PST file (ansi): ~2GB
Maximum size of a PST file (unicode): Microsoft write ~20GB, other sites
write ~3.9TB

Hi Oliver,
In my case, the Format says just: Personal Folders File. What does this mean?
Thanks,
Ed

1) I did not suggest you post to another group
2) Your questions have allready been answered in your origonal thread
3) by creating another post you simply add to the confussion

Hi Ed,

at first: .."...just: Personal Folders File.

Sorry my mistake. This means "unicode PST"

2nd: Please use as "DL" say: New question => New posting.
