Hi,
I have Vista and tried to download Flash via the Quia test site to take an
online exam. Then I tried going to Adobe. Spent 4 hours unsuccessfully.
Then I went to Best Buy where I bought my compuer (which is 2 months old) and
they tried for 2 hours unsuccessfully. They told me that Vista has known
compatability problems with Flash. They also said they only way to rectify
the problem was to reformat the hard drive and start over. They said they
said that by initially trying to download through a third party (which may
have had an older version) could have corrupted something that was not
fixable. By reformatting etc. I would loose all my software that I got
through my work (multiple user use) and I no longer work there or have access
to office which means I would not have to buy microsoft office, plus they
would charge me the "rebuild" and backing of my information. I bought my
computer on a one years financing and can't afford to spend several hundred
dollars fixing something I haven't even paid for yet.
I have contacted Microsoft, HP and Adobe and after numerous more hours was
told they don't know what the problem is.
I uninstalled any previous attempts and then tried your standalone patch,
but it does not work either.
Do you have any other solutions.
I am at my wits end.

Right-click on the IE icon located on the Taskbar and select
"Run as administrator". Then visit:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

and click on "Install Now".

Did you run the uninstall program first, before you installed the download
version?

Thanks,
Don't mean to sound like an idiot, but I'm not finding the IE icon.

I haven't seen anywhere, but can I assume you are not using the IE 64-bit
version. That will not install Flash. You need to be using IE 32-bit. If
you are, go into Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash What files do you have?
Do you have an uninstall? If so run it. Does that remove the other files?
Go into IE\tools\programs\manage add-ons Using the dropdown select
Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32-bit) Select Shockwave Flash Object and
click on delete
Then in the Flash file rename the install.log file to installx.log Then
follow Carey's instructions for running the Flash update and See what you
end up with. The log file you rename can be used if necessary to delete any
entries in the registry that need to be deleted, but first lets see what we
get in the new log file when you follow Carey's instructions.

I did this (first un-installing flash), but it did not install. I tried
You-Tube and other sites that require flash, and I couldn't view them.
What happened to corrupt this. Flash was installed initially with Vista
when I bought the compute 2 months ago and used to work, and then suddenly
stopped.
Do you think I got a virus? I have McAfee and Spy Sweeper and update daily.
Any ideas on what happend?
The guys at Best Buy suggested wiping the hard drive clean and starting
over. Do you think I should go ahead and do this?
I would really appreciate any suggestions at this point.
Thanks so much already for all your and John's help.

Have you followed the steps I outlined below? You seem to be computer savvy
enough to follow those steps. The install log in the Flash folder should
provide you with the history of any installs, thereby allowing you to undo
any changes. Not sure why Best Buy wouldn't think to look there. Again I
am assuming you are using 32-bit as you haven't said.
