Help Please-Moviemaker files

I have recently D/L some files from different newsgroups that were WMV
based. The majority of them will not play using Windows Media Player and
say an error occurs with the codec, also had an error making mention about
indexing. Can someone point me in the right direction to unscramble this
mess or do I need another type of player? When using the Windows Movie
Maker program the indexing issue shows. Thanks.
