Well, followed a few links. Dl RA_PLAYER.DLL for Irfanview and
RealPlayer codecs, but still not able to play some RM files. I just
need to convert 2 RM files to MP3 (even if playing them with a wav
recorder on recording them to wav then converting that wav to mp3).

Have we revisited this issue recently? It seems that once we find a
solution, RP comes along with upgrade and we're back to square one.

TIA.

The subject of being able to HEAR/SEE RealFiles may be on the
gray edge of freeware discussion. To be sure, the program called
RealAlternative is a short-circuit around installation of a bonafide
RealPlayer package, both being obtained online freely. However,
the RealAlternative route employs the use of actual RealPlayer
codecs, as well as an older version of Windows MPlayer having
support for Real Files. On the other hand, the honest-to-goodness
RealPlayer is verrrry intrusive, insidious, and often balks at being
controlled with its so-called internal choices. No wonder many are
anxious to find and use RealAlternative.

The question for this forum is ... Is this a subject for discussion in a
'Freeware' world? Probably not. The above discussion would seem
to fit in better with a hack & crack situation. Hacks and cracks are
available anywhere, but an altered or separated part of a program to
circumvent the intended use does not make it ... freeware.

The only ways currently available to hear and keep a copy of streamed
music, are to purchase the ability from RealMedia, or use one of the
available freeware 'recorder' programs which will save 'what-U-hear'
to .mp3 or other format. As far as conversions from, say .RM to .MP3,
there seems to be no freeware available to do that. There are some
commercial programs available, though, and not a subject for freeware.

To convert rm to wav, give either of these two programs a shot. They are
both freeware:

dBpowerAMP Music Converter (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm)

Real Audio to Wav Recorder (http://rawavrecorder.homestead.com/)

Each will convert both streaming rm and local rm files. The first can
convert from rm to nearly any other major audio format. The second one
converts only to WAV. Both require that you have the RealAudio codecs
installed on your system. I know dBpowerAMP will not work with any version
of Real after Real8.
RaWav Recorder apparently does work with RealOne. Before using either, be
sure to RTFM and instructions on the web sites. If you know what you're
doing, either will give you the results you seek.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yep. It is safe. But it will not convert anything, if that's what you want.
Here's a file description:

Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having
to install the official RealPlayer. You do need a media player that is
capable of playing RealMedia files. The included Media Player Classic
supports it. Supported are RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealVideo (.rm .ram .rmvb),
RealText (.rt), and RealPix (.rp). Not fully supported are: Streaming smil
files (.smi .smil) and Realmedia embedded in webpages.
