HELP!!! Pagefile.sys missing.....

I had a weird problem.....at logon, after you clicked the image of the only
account on the XP Pro machine (no password) you would see the line that says
XP is loading your personal settings, but it would hang there until you hit
CTRL-ALT-DEL, then the music would play and everything looked to be normal.

This wasn't right, so I started snooping around the machine for possible
viruses/spyware/adware/malware and I used Wintask Pro 4 to look at what was
loading with XP. All of these things checked out.

But, when I looked at the event logs, it said that I had a problem with
installing SP1a, so I downloaded it from Microsoft and re-installed SP1a.

Now when I start the machine it tells me that the pagefile is missing or
corrupt. I tried changing the system's swap file to a second hard drive -
didn't work and reported 0 for size after restart.

I tried upping the systems swap file size - didn't work and reported 0 for
size after restart.

I tried allowing the system to control the swapfile size - didn't work and
reported 0 for size after restart.

I placed an empty pagefile.sys file at C:\ and tried all of the above
gain - didn't work and reported 0 for size after restart.

I *REALLY* don't want to do a complete re-install on this machine - it took
me 2 days to set it up. Does anybody know how to fix this zero size swap
file issue without a complete re-install?
