Hi, Now... I am very new to networking, And just bought a
D-Link Router and I now have 2 computers hooked up to it
and then they both use my ADSL line. My ISP wouldnt help
me so I called D-Link to have them help me with the
Router. The Router is up and working and both computers
can use the line.

However, My problem is this... The main machine with the
Router software is this one, The XP machine. The machine
in the living room has 98 SE on it. I want to know if
someone can help me set it up so that I can share files
between the two computers and help me have a better
understanding on the type of setup I want here. But the
main issue is just on how to make it so that my windows
XP machine and my windows 98 SE machine will be able to
share files and both be accessavble from one another. I
can provide more information if you need more.

Thanks very much.
Sincerely,
Andre Desharnais

Run the Windows XP Network Setup Wizard on both computers, which will
make all the necessary network settings for file sharing. Tell the
Wizard that the computers connect to the Internet through a
"residential gateway". Details here:

Assuming a normal physical setup, with the ADSL line plugged
into the router's uplink port and the XP PC and the W9x PC
plugged into downlink ports of the router, then you do not
have a main machine: from the network perspective, both PCs
are equal.

First, setup both PCs as DHCP clients and enable the router's
DHCP server capability; that will get both PCs in the same IP
subnet. To verify, run WINIPCFG on the W9x PC and look at
the IP address and mask; on the XP PC, run CMD and enter
IPCONFIG/ALL in the CMD window. The typical mask will be
255.255.255.0; 255.255.0.0 is also OK. For IP=a.b.c.d, a.b.c
should be the same on both PCs and the d's should be unique.

To setup sharing on a XP-W9x net, see this:
