Help on error message 2nd post

I am using MS PPT 2003 on Dell M70 and I now get error message that file is
read only and will not let me save the wav file I created. I even tried to
record and import from another program. The record/playback works fine in
other program but not in PPT. Have I exceeded a limit or something? I am
working on a class that is 6 hours long. Please help as I need to get this
done. I can play other slides I have created with sound and they work fine,
but not the ones I am trying to add in the middle of the program.

I'm guessing it's the PowerPoint file that you are working with that is
read-only, not the WAV file? Can you clarify?
 
I hope this is what you need: slide show then record narration then mike
level-ok- then OK (record) then stop when done. then error mess. will not
let me save sound, however after I clear the error m. I can save the file
(but not the sound I just recorded). I have also tried to record on another
program and play back .. it works fine. I tried to then insert the file
through PPT but the same message comes up.

I am using MS office Pro 2003 installed by Dell on my M70. The message reads
(in part could not capture and paste here) PPT can't access
C:\...temp\PP2901.wav because the file or folder is read only. I checked the
setting in tools it is not checked as read only. It does work once in a
while...like yesterday after a chat session to my office.

I suspect something else has control of the MCI player/control. Try
shutting down everything (especially messenger and then check to make
certain it is closed in the task manager) but PowerPoint and see if you
still have the problem.

Hi Austin, Thank you for replying. How do I shut everything down? I checked
the task man. and the only thing running is the descussion group. Is there a
location to go to so I can shut all things going in back ground down
including my screen saver?
 
Try emptying the Temp folder -- or whatever folder that is listed in the
error message. It may just be too full.

Your screen saver can be changed by right clicking anywhere on the desktop
selecting "properties" and then the screen saver tab. However, I was
thinking more along the lines of anything that might be grabbing (or not
releasing) control of your audio/video hardware.

Hi Auston, again thank you! I made sure everything was off in the task
manager then checked the trey at the bottom of my screen and the messenger
was off but still must have been active. I exited from that program and
waited a minute for it to go completely away and then opened up PPT and began
recording. I have recorded about 15 slides so far and it is still working.

As much as I like Messenger, it can sure cause some headaches with
video/audio hardware. Its one of those programs that grabs hardware when it
loads because you *might* want to do voice or a web cam at some point and
having it pre-loaded makes Messenger respond a little faster if you do.

In theory (as explained to me) its supposed to release the hardware if its
not being used at the time you request it from another application. But as
you can see, that doesn't always work with PowerPoint. But to be fair, the
problem could also just as easily be in the sound card driver. (Have you
checked for an updated driver?)

The other big problem is that closing Messenger down fails far too often and
the only way to remove it and its hooks into the hardware is through the
Task Manger. (Ctl+Alt+Del to reach the Task Manager) When ever I shut
Messenger down I always use Task Manager to make certain its closed and
removed from memory.

Still frustrated Austin, I checked the driver and it is SigmaTel C-Major
Audio 3/11/2005 vs 5.10.0.4255 and was the latest acording to my computer. I
went on the web but did not find any newer updates. The porblem with the
same error message is back. I deleted the slide and re-typed it in and
re-recorded the voice and the same thing happened. I had just recorded about
5 slides and they worked ok. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
 
Thank you to everyone who tried to solve this problem. A friend told me to
delete Spy Doctor as soon as he saw the error message and checked what
programs I had on the computer. It worked ... no more problems...I can
record fine! :)
