boot device window I then select hard drive from a list (it has a small + in
front of it) a second window appears asking me to select which hard drive.
The computer then boots normally. Have tried fixboot and fixmbr but no

Hi,

Boot the Recovery Console, copy ntldr from the CD to the root of the boot
partition from the command prompt:

copy X:\I386\ntldr C:\

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive.

Hi Malcolm,

Let's backtrack a bit. What were you doing or what changes did you make to
the system shortly before this problem began? It seems to me like your
system has some confusion going on as to what device to boot. Were you
messing around in the bios at all? Did you add some hardware?

Hello Rick,

Didn't add a thing or make any changes. Was typing a report and the comp had
a fatal error restarted and that was the start of the problem. The comp
works fine when it's started it just that you have to tell in manually what

Hi,

Ok, start/run eventvwr.msc, look at the system and application logs from
when it happened. There may be some clue as to what the faulty module is, or
a bcc error code we can research.

Also, start/run C:\boot.ini

Copy/paste the contents into the reply as well.

Hi

Thanks for the interest in my problem in the system log the only thing is a
"remote procedure call service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1
time." It then states that the machine will reboot in 60000 milliseconds.

Here is the c:\boot.ini file you wanted

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home

I don't know if this is of any use but my defrag programme is perfect disk
6.0. I ran it and analyzed the drive. The directory is represented by green
squares there were no green squares and normally there are about 4 or 5.

Hi Malcolm,

Boot.ini looks fine, but the missing directory (green) information is a
concern. Some things to check:

- No floppy inadvertantly left in the drive

- You said you tried fixboot from the Recovery Console already? Did you try
"fixboot C:"?

- Start/run diskmgmt.msc, make sure the system partition is set as active

- Have you tried "chkdsk C: /r" from the Recovery Console yet? This may
resolve the missing directory problem. Also, do you see the light blue
segments representing the boot files?
