Hello,

I'm having a very strange problem. Suddenly none of my application
installer programs will open. I had a system crash recently, I
formatted my hard drive, reinstalled Win 2K and now I can't seem to
reinstall about 90% of my apps.

I double-click on the application installer file, it pops up for about
1/2 second and then disappears and does nothing. A few of them have
worked, but the great majority do the same thing, pop up and almost
instantly disappear and do not install.

Anyone have any ideas on what's going on?

Need help ASAP!!!!

Thank you,
S

It is going to depend on which type of installer is being used. For
instance, do programs like Microsoft Office install properly, or does it
fail? Reason being, there are two main types of installer, the Windows
Installer which uses MSI files to install, and InstallShield, which is a
common third-party installer that is very popular. You might try looking in
your event logs and see if anything is logging an error when you try to
install an app.

Thanks for the response! Where would I find the appropriate event
log? I searched my system for Event Log and it came up with a bunch
of files. All of the ones titles Event log were .dll files.

And to answer your question, yes certain types of installers seemed to
work fine. The ones with the little "my computer" looking icon
install fine. Sorry I can't be more specific about what type of file
that is. I hope you will know what I'm talking about.

I believe it is in fact the install shield apps that will not load.

I don't understand how formatting my drive did not eliminate this
problem?

The easiest way to get to Event Viewer is to right-click My Computer and
choose Manage. From there you can look at your event logs and see if there
are any events there referencing either the Windows Installer Service,
MSIEXEC or InstallShield. I would think that formatting the machine would
have to take care of any issues you had, assuming you had this same issue
before formatting. If not, it could just be a coincidence.

Ok, I went through my Event Log, I didn't see anything about errors.
At least not relating to installer files. I did see a few references
under Event Viewer/Applications relating to "MsiInstaller" I looked at
them and they were only confirmations of installing and removing
programs.

Strange too, this morning I clicked on one of the installers that
previously would not work, and it worked...Others still will not.
Makes no sense!

Yes I did have this problem before formatting, that was about half my
reason for performing the format in the first place.

What else can I do?? I really need to get this resolved!
