Just reformated hard drive and now can't get sound to work. It's an Athlon
2800XP with an Asus motherboard and an ESS Alegro sound card. The device
manager says the device is "working properly" and the correct drivers are
installed. I've tried an old set of speakers and they didn't work either.
When plugging and unplugging I hear connection noice from the speakers and
hear "pops" on shutdown.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

I had the same problem after installing Win2003Server on
my machine. Had to find out that you need to enter Control
Panel Sounds where there is a new front page to the applet
which states that Windows Audio must be activated, with a
cute little checkbox for doing just that. I checked it and
things got OK real fast. Hope this helps.

For what it is worth, it was the drivers. The original download must have
been corrupted in some way - windows had said driver was good and the device
was functioning properly - but went to ESS Tech andgot another one and works
fine now.

Thanks all!
