I have a DSL line routed through a D-Link Router and then through an 8 port
switch to my computer. There was an electrical storm a couple weeks ago,
and there seems to be an intermitent network connectivity problem ever
since.
The DSL modem, router, switch, and computer are all on UPS systems. The
phone line does go directly into the DSL modem. I have a file server and my
wife's system which also experience intermittent problems. They are all
connected
to the D-Link router or the switch - so that is why I thik it is on that
end. However,
I have used the D-Link's HTML interface and it looks fine. I have rebooted
the
router with no effect.

The following describes the types of problems I have been observing:

A. Yahoo Messenger will loose contact with the server, go blank,
and then within a few seconds regain contact and redisplay my friends list.

B. The browser will start bringing in a page and just stops. However, a
refresh of the link cause the broswer to pick up the page immediately.

C. Downloads will stop in the middle of a download. However, if I pause the
download and then restart it, the download continues.

Can anyone suggest how I might analyze this problem? Is it possible that
the router or switch was damaged and on occasion is loosing packets? Can
anyone suggest how I might issolate where the issue is? Is there open
source software that can trace packets or a WEB site that can help analyze
where the problem might be coming from? Is there a better way to issolate
the problem?

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

It certainly could be a hardware issue caused by the storm.

First, I would plug a PC directly into your router and see how that works.
This will let you know if it is a problem with your router or not. The other
thing would be to replace the switch (if the router works o.k.) and test that
way.
