Hi all,

I have been using Norton Anti Virus and the Norton Firewall but have found
that my 2.53gig with 512 meg of RAM laptop is not really slow. I have been
told that it's the Norton software which is doing it and they recommended
that I change it but the big question is to what. Can anyone recommend
alternatives to the Anti Virus and firewall software that I am using at the
moment.

First you should prove that the software is indeed is slowing down your notebook.

Before I put the software on it works really quickly and when I load it up
with the defaults it is really slow.

The only "real" way to determine if it is norton slowing you down
would be to uninstall it and then run your computer again without it
installed on your computer. Unfortunately, connecting to the
internet, checking email, or installing software from an unknown
source could be risky without any protection.
What could be "slowing" down your computer is if you have what is
known as real time active monitoring (or whatever Norton calls it).
If you have that turned on, which could be by default, EVERYTHING
you do on your computer is run through Norton. Everytime you open,
close, create, delete a file, it is scanned. Some antivirus programs
can slow down a computer by checking everything you do on your
computer.
I haven't been a fan of Norton products for years, but that is just my
opinion. Norton has a good track record, and is a good product for
some, but I don't care for it. I use an alternative Antivirus which
soots my needs. If norton came with your computer, and you are happy
with it, after you find out what is causing it to "slow down" if that
is the case, you can uncheck some of the real time monitoring options,
or dump it in favor of an alternative. Asking for opinions on which
antivirus software on here will open up a can of worms again LOL.
It's like asking which car is the best. Everyone has their favorites.

Your machine is 4 times faster than my old cranky desktop and has twice as
much RAM. I was running NAV & NPF 2002 for two years, both with default
and modified settings, without any such problems. Yes, Norton is memory
hungry and yes, there are other "lighter/faster/cheaper/better and of
course much worse" products out there, but I would humbly suggest that you
should first check what's causing the slow down in your machine.

Without opening any applications like MS Office, OE, IE, etc. and without
being connected to the internet/LAN, check which processes are running in
your Task Manager (right-click on the taskbar) and how much CPU/memory is
used by them.

Unless Norton is scanning on demand, downloading updates, or filtering
your incoming/outgoing email, there shouldn't really see any CPU running
due to Norton's processes. I am not sure how recent (2003, 2004) Norton
products perform, but I would expect them to get slicker not heavier with
time. Yet again, . . . ;-)
