I have a problem same as Navin R. Johnson posted on 25
Sep 2003.
Any ideas, anyone?
<<<<<
I'm having problems setting up security with my home
network and want to
ask you experts about it. I have three networked systems
all running
WinXP Pro. I can access network resources (shared
printers & folders)
on all three with no problem. Broadband is set up through
a Linksys
Firewall router and works fine and the MS Firewall is
disabled on all
three systems. The problem is that I have a folder on my
personal system
that I would like to access from any system on the
network but I don't
want anyone else to be able to access it.
Previously, I had Win98 running on all three systems and
all I had to do
was go to the sharing properties for the folder and set
up an access
password. Everyone on the network could see that folder
but when they
clicked on it, it would ask for a password - that only I
knew. I want to
do the same thing with WinXP Pro but haven't been able to
figure out
how.
The folder in question is located in my
personal 'Documents and
Settings' folder under 'My Documents' and is shared. I
think my problem
is in the 'Permissions' setting for the folder. I go to
the 'Properties'
for the folder then click the 'Sharing' tab then click
the 'Permissions'
button. Listed under 'Group or user names' there is one
item -
Kazmir(DAD\Kazmir) - which is my username and system name
and it's set
to have full control. At this point, I click the 'Add'
button and go to
the next screen titled 'Select Users or Groups' - so that
I can set up
more usernames that will have access to the folder. I
should say, before
this, I went to each of the other two systems and set up
admin-class
user accounts for me to use. When I click the 'Locations'
button it only
shows one location - my own computer. I'm thinking that I
should see the
other two networked computers (Locations) there too - so
that I can
choose the users that will have access to the folder.
What am I not
understanding here??? This has been driving me crazy for
awhile now.
One more thing - I have another (fourth) system set up on
the network
running W2K Pro. I made the username and password for it
exactly the
same as the username and password on my personal system.
From there, I
can access the folder in question with no problem. Go
figure... Any help
on this would be greatly appreciated
