i have a couple of problems, 1 is how do i stop these
pesky pop ups in windows xp and also i have had problems
trying to download a virus protector off the internet, it
downloads fine but when it comes to doing the setup the
page keeps closing down in the middle of the process and
i have to start over again, this also happens in msconfig
mode, as soon as i go in there it closes off everytime.
if anyone can help i would be greatly appreciative as im
going crazy trying things and not getting anywhere.
please email.

Sounds like you have a badly infected machine, and that the infections are
"defensive".

Three possibilities:

Download the McAfee standalone "Stinger" from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ (fits on a floppy) and run that. It doesn't
catch everything but you may be lucky.

Use the virus software (e.g. Norton) on another machine to create a "Rescue
disk" which will allow you to regain control long enough to do a full virus
scan. Procedures differ with different software - see what a
friend/colleague/neighbour has available.

Remove (or have someone remove) your hard disk and virus-scan it while
connected as an external drive on another machine. You can get various
adapters to hook up drives to a USB port. Here's one:

As for your pop ups, did you turn off Messenger? Go to
Admin Tools in Control Panel > Select Services > and stop
the Messenger service from running. Hope that helps.
