help needed building AMD 64bit system

I am ready to order parts to build an AMD 64bit cpu system. I have built
lots of systems in the past, but feel a bit uneasy on this one-- not sure
if I will need to buy special RAM, etc. Any tips on building such a
system? Will my current videocard and memory work, or will I need a
specially fast videocard and special memory? What memory chips should I
choose (DDR, etc.)? I currently have an ATI Radeon 7500 agp video card.

Your video card is fine, you can also use all of your current disks.
If you are building an AthlonFX/Opteron based system you'll need
registered DDR ECC RAM. If you are building a 754 pin Athlon64 then you'll
need unregisted, non-ECC DDR. You should probably wait a month to see what
the 939 pin Athlon64 systems look like. The 754 pin versions have only a
single RAM channel, the 939s have dual channel memory (like the Opterons)
but they can use unregistered RAMs. There are some significant
improvements in the associated chipsets that are going to be used with the
939s which may make the wait worthwhile.

Thank you. I think I will wait and be patient. Maybe in the meantime get a
faster video card with more video memory. My main need for improved speed
and performance is digital art --- creating 3D objects and 3D scenes,
render them to 2D, work on large hi-res digital images -- perhaps the best
thing for now is to get a really nice video card with lots of video RAM.
