Your E-mail is still there. Mcaffe just changes the inbox.dbx file or
location. Use to be simple on 98se operating systems. Tight click on your
inbox in Outlook Express & select properities. This is where mine is
located. On XP Pro
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{3FA5FCCA-1F4D-44D1-B728-EEF4AEC7A7FC}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\Inbox.dbx

You could try importing the mail from the orig mailbox to the new 1, or use
Explorer to move the inbox to where Outlook Express needs it to be

Thanks Geese,
but there are no such files. I tried everything... (*.dbx etc. gives
nothing). Only newly created ones (empty)...
still trying...

If you haven't done anything else & you have system restore on, you could
restore your PC to before you installed it, & then Export your mail.
OR

In Outlook Express go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. Is the
store folder similar to C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{3FA5FCCA-1F4D-44D1-B728-EEF4AEC7A7FC}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express ? Or is a Mcaffe folder?

From the command prompt I was able to see all my inbox.dbx, as well as any
newsgroup that I ever subcrribed to, but couldn't copy the inbox in the 2
attempts that I tried to. I'll have to delete a few newsgroups soon.

What option, if any, was set for the action taken when a file
was found to be "infected"?

Quarantine? Delete? Prompt?

There used to be a problem with some AV programs detecting
the entire inbox.dbx file as "infected" when in actuality there was
only a "possible exposure" to a single worm ridden e-mail within
it (I would like to think that they would have that fixed by now
though).

Maybe you could go into "quarantine" and restore the "inbox.dbx"
file to its original location. If "delete" was the option enabled, maybe
you could use XP "System Restore" feature to roll it back in place.

If the AV deleted it, the restore function should have made
a "back-up" copy. If the AV quarantined it, you should be
able to restore from there.

You may want to consider backing up your folder store
manually from time to time if you value the data within.

I have the feeling that it is not "The whole story" seems a bit impossible
to me.
