Hi guys,
Once again I am having computer trouble. I recently reformatted my Inspiron
1100 laptop and most things are working normally. Yet oftentimes, when I try
to download a word document from the internet and open it in Word, it asks me
to select from a series of formats and then proceeds to give me jibberish
(such as weird squares and symbols). I was missing the sound driver for my
comp. Is it possible that I am also missing some type of other driver?
Please help as I am a student and need to be able to download and print
documents for lecture.

Thank you!!

Yes, did you installed the Video card driver, Motherboard drivers, get the
updates for OFFice and installed the right printer driver?.

How are you downloading these documents. Is AOL involved?

Are you using either Internet Explorer or Firefox - or something else.

The document may not be downloading properly and it _may_ not be your fault.

I am not sure if I installed any of those things. I just assumed that they
came with windows XP when I installed it. I don't know anything about
computers. I know that there is something wrong with my computer because I
have tried downloading all sorts of things in PDF and my Word can never open
then. I think it must be my fault. Where do I find those other drivers to
download? How do I know that I have them.

Thanks!

XP is an operating system. It has some lightweight tools to handle text but
for the most part you need to install applications that are suited to
handle specific file types.

For PDF files, download the free Adobe Reader:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

For DOC files, if MS Word Document files: Install MS Word or the free Word
Viewer. Link for Word Viewer:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA101869931033.aspx?pid=CH100970181033

NOTE: Your computer may have come with XP and *other software* installed.
It's not unusual for manufacturers to bundle in "extras." Since everything
comes "pre-installed" it's easy for less technical users to mistake these
extras as a part of the operating system. They're not and will need to be
reinstalled if you ever reinstall the operating system.

What you can do: Check the installation disks that came with the computer.
You may find that you have a copy of MS Office which includes MS Word or a
version of MS Works that also includes MS Word. If found, you will also
need a separate product key for those products (probably on the CD
wrappers) to install them.

I'm afraid that you are greatly confused here. No version of Word can open
any pdf files on anybody ele's computer either.

Word is a word processing program. It is designed to open word processing
files --basically doc files, rtf files, and txt files (although for
compatibility purposes it can also open word processing files produced by
other word processors). There are many thousand of other types of computer
files, and Word can't open most of them. A pdf file is one of those types.

A pdf file is a file in "portable document format," a format designed by
Adobe. To open a pdf file, you need a pdf reader. The basic pdf reader is
available for free from Adobe, and is called "Adobe Reader." There are also
several otherpdf readers available, some freeware and some shareware.

Go to www.adobe.com and click on "Get ADOBE READER." After you've downloaded
and installed it, you'll be able to open pdf files.
