What do I do to fix this problem?

1. You could make sure that the temperature arises in the room to
avoid this. ;}
2. Tell us more details about what happens exactly and if you see some
error messages. Also check the Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Event Viewer for if you can find related info here.

Some steps to help your computer from freezing.
1) Add More RAM
2) Clean out temp. folder and temporary internet folder.
3) Get rid of programs not used that are just taking up
space.
4) up your virtual memory
5) Last resort, reimage computer

Thorsten,

I am having the same problem. I checked the Event Viewer and see plenty of
Application Hangs. Many of them say "Fault bucket 12870845" or some other
number. Does this offer any clues?

Does it say which application? Did your current installation of XP come
with the system, is it an upgrade, is it a clean install, what else have you
done, have you perhaps reinstalled XP over itself, when did this issue
begin, was there anything you can recall installing or removing just prior
to it beginning, have you made sure you have the latest drivers for your
hardware, have you run a virus scan, have you run Ad Aware,
www.lavasoftusa.com...
There's a whole bunch of stuff you're not telling us.

Michael,

Good questions. Sorry I didn't go into more detail. I was just trying to
tag onto the messages posted by Catherine and Thorsten.

No, the Events Viewer did not specifiy a particular program that I could
discern.
It did have the following information:
Source: Application Hang
Category: None
Event ID: 1001

My system is an approximately 6-month old Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop that
came with XP Home. I have not installed XP over itself and I regularly
update Windows and the drivers from Dell. I regularly use AdAware and my
Antivirus program is a Russian one called Kaspersky AV.

My problems only started this morning. I had the computer overseas where it
was functional (other than a slight problem with not being able to open My
Computer) and when I came home and fired it up, it started acting very very
strange and then started all these freezes every 15 minutes. When I
submitted a problem report to MS, it did tell me that it was associated with
a video driver but I have the latest driver from ATI for the Radeon 9000. I
even saw one error that said something about "STOP 0X000000EA
THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER." In researching this, I see that it could
also be a hardware issue. I'll just have to wait and see on that one.

I did get the message that there were updates (from MS) to be installed but
I can't remember if it was before or after the problems began. I installed
the updates and that either caused the problem or did not cure it. I just
can't remember .... still sleep deprived from changing timezones.

Since I posted my message, I went back THREE System Restore points and
it has been ok for a few hours. It must have been something I did in the
last few days. If I get brave, I will again download the latest Windows
Updates. This time I will know if it causes problems.

Thanks for the help but "maybe" I am cured. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Check the logs again. Just before or after the "Fault bucket" entry
you should find another "Application error" entry that is related and
contains more information. Here this happens with EXPLORER.EXE and
NTDLL.DLL from time to time.

Yes, that would have been my next suggestion, to use System Restore as
you've already done.

Note Thorsten's post in this thread as well as you should find a reference
to the faulting application. Though, if it's "Explorer.exe," that's usually
indicative of an issue with some other application you've installed or a
problem with drivers. Can't say for sure though what you've posted does,
indeed indicate an issue with your ATI card. If this starts again, you
might try checking the ATI site for drivers as opposed to the Dell site
though since your card is an OEM card, they might just send you back to
Dell. Nonetheless, if this persists, you might want to contact Dell with
the information as they need to know if issues such as this are arising.
