Does anyone have an idea why my computer went insane after I downloaded or
upgraded the Internet explorer? I have a window which is kind of invisible
and if I click onto a link, (in the invisible window I have to type it
myself to go to the site) I also have the " Explorer " This program has
performed an illegal operation MFC42.dll) I am not too sure how to go
about rebooting,

* also does anyone have any idea how to get a computer which was working win
98. to work again?? I tried to use a startup disk, but I want to delete
everything and start new,

Ask in a Microsoft newsgroup? microsoft.public.win98.*
And search Google.com for mfc42.dll+error

Hi,
What does this have to do with freeware???
Anyway, here (briefly) what to do.
If you can't figure it out, you can contact me by email,
but this thread does not belong here.

1. CHECKUP BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING.
Do you have the Windows CD, do you have the Windows serial nr., do you have
the correct drivers (!!) have you backed up important files etc.
Keep in mind that after the format you will only have Windows with its
default programs and nothing more.
2. Go into your BIOS Setup and check if the boot sequence includes
diskettes (A).
3. Download a bootdisk of your Windows version at
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm2.
Do not take the no-ramdrive version.
4. Start the EXE you just downloaded to make a bootdisk.
Make sure the disk is all right, that is no damaged sectors.
5. Start your computer with the bootdisk, with disabled CD-ROM support.
Type "format c:" to format the C-drive.
You may want to format other drives as well.
Perhaps you even want to repartition your harddisk(s).
Type "fdisk" to do that.
6. Restart your computer and boot with the same bootdisk.
This time, choose enabled CD-ROM support
7. Put your Windows CD in your CD-ROM-player and type the letter of your
CD-drive (example: "f:")
8. Type "setup" to start the Windows setup.
From this point on, you are most likely able to handle things yourself.

Good luck, and remember this is a freeware newsgroup.

Look under help and "system file checker".

Depends what version of Win98 you have. If it's the upgrade, then
you'll need to reinstall over the old setup, if it's the version for
new PC's, then you can erase the hard drive completely with a utility
such as Eraser and then run the startup disk/CD.

Be sure you have any other disks or CDs required for your hardware
before you begin, as well as any software you wish to install after.
