Your system disk? Easiest way (least painful) is to re-install.

Drive Letters Change Unexpectedly When You Install Windows XP

You'll have to physically disconnect whatever drive is shown as the current C: drive,
perform a "clean install", then reconnect that drive.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

7. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

The suggestion to a clean install is a good idea since
there could be consequences to changing the driver letter.

However if you still want to do so simply go through
control panel, administrative tools and then computer
management. From there in the storage section, open it up
and select Disk Management. From here you can change the
drive letter.

Yeah - that and a few dozen/hundred+ registry entry changes and other
things..

Just re-install. Trust me.

Shenan,
There is another program that comes with Partition Magic 7.0 that will
automatically make the registry changes for you. It figures out which drive
letters will change, then scans the registry for all entries that are
affected and changes them to the new drive letter. I've only used it once,
but it worked as advertised. On the other hand, I was adding a new partition
AFTER the C drive, so all it had to change was the registry and shortcut
references to the CDROM drive. I can't guarantee how well it would do with
changing the system drive, but I suppose jk could give it a try and then if
it fails, he could always do like you said, and reinstall from scratch. I
don't remember the name of the sub-program, but it is part of Partition
Magic.

Hmm.. Interesting. I stand corrected.
Thanks for the information.

Anyone else out there used this application - how did it work for you?

Not for the system drive though!
