Maria C.

I am having a major problem here. I have had this
program for a while, and this is the fist time that I
have received this issue. The problem is now sending
error reports to Micorsoft. And sending these error
reports to Microsoft, I'm not getting a response,..so I
decided to come here.

Its my Microsoft word. I was doing a document one
day,..and then out of the blue, the error box popped up
saying that the program has to be shut down. Well, ever
since that has happened, I have not been able to get MS
word back up again, I mean not been able to use it. Every
time I push the icon for Word, I get the same error
message, and the program immediatly shuts down. Well, its
asks me first if I want to send an error report, then I
click on yes or no,.then it shuts down.

I have tried to uninstall the program and re install it,
several times,..but the same thing happens. The error
box shows up. I have the Microsoft works Suite 2001
package, and I've also noticed that none of my other
programs work. Encarta, Streets & trips and so forth. I
am really at the point where I don't know what to do. I
have done all that I can to correct with I didn wrong. I
have uninstalled, re-installed, did a back up, and
checked for errors, nothing....

I am fustrated because I need Word. And I am unable to
use it. I have purchased this program like everyone
else,..and its unfair that even though I have the actual
disk for this, I am unable to use it. So please help me
on this,..I don't want to get another program to do my
documents on,..I really love Word, and don't want to
change. Please!

It looks to me as if the problem is with Works and not Word as it provides
the gateway to the other programs you mention.

When you say that you uninstalled and re-installed, does that mean Works or
just Word? If it's just Word, I would try uninstalling and re-installing
the whole Works suite.

In any case, it's not worth giving up on Word and using something else as
you still need to tackle the fundamental problem.

Good luck

Peter

Hi, Maria.

That automatic reporting thing is more a statistics-gathering tool for MS to
use to identify wide-spread issues than an individual support tool. You are
not likely to get any direct response. :>(

Word is a great program, as you know, so it's worth the effort to get it
working again. As Peter T. said in his post, it sounds like your problem is
more with the Works Suite than with Word, since you are having problems
starting the other programs in the suite, too.
Every
time I push the icon for Word, I get the same error
message, and the program immediatly shuts down.

Since you are sitting there looking at it, and we are not, could you please
copy down the error message, word for word, and post it here. Even if it is
gibberish to you, many readers here will see it and some might recognize it
and know which way to point you.

Do you get the same error when trying to start Encarta, etc., or is it
different for the other programs?

The more specific information you give us - about your computer and about
what happens as you try to load the programs - the better chance you have
that we will be able to help you.

To isolate whether the problem is in the launch of WORD
through an interface with WORKS try to open WORD using the
Start/Run box by typing WINWORD and pressing enter.

Dear Peter, and R.C.,

Thank sooo much for your response. I know I sounded a tad
over-extreme, but I've never posted like this before to
ask for help, so I really didn't know how to engage in
asking for what it is that I'm having a problem with.
Also, I'm fustrated.

Anyways, Peter you mentioned if I have un-installed in re-
installed the entire suite program,..I have. I have only
done it once, but I'm attempted to try it again. I've
noticed from openning some of the programs now, they are
now working, they weren't before. My Streets & Trips is
at the point of being corrupted, and I have to repare it
from the Disk-setup, which I'm going to do, but as for
Word, well word is my most important program to use. I
mean I can survive without Encarta. I live off my Word.

Well, R.C. I'll tell you as much of what I see. So bare
with me, okay? When I press my icon for Word, I get that
box that says to send an error report. Saying:

"Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When I click on what the data this error report contains
it says:

Error Signature:
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.6926 ModName:
winword.exe
ModVer: 9.0.0.6926 Offset: 0040ea0c

When click to view Technical information about the error
report I get:

(its says that this part will be included in the error
report)
C:\DOCUME~1\Maria\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER25B.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

So that is pretty much what I get. When I send the error
report, Word just shuts down. And that is that. So, I
hope that I have given you some information to help me
out. I hope I did.

Sincerley,

Maria C.

Hi, Maria.

The added information helps some, but a bit more would help us get a handle
on the problem. You've posted two messages, and we still don't know some
basic facts. :>(

Is your computer a Gateway? A Dell? Which model? Or did you assemble it
yourself? Was the Works Suite preinstalled? Or did you buy the Suite
separately? These details might not point us directly to the problem, but
they will keep us from suggesting you contact Dell if your computer is an
HP, for example.

While you are waiting for more specific answers, try running the System File
Checker. At the Run prompt, type: sfc /scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP operating system file with the "known good" copy
help in your on-disk cache and replace any missing or damaged ones. Have
your WinXP CD-ROM CD handy; SFC probably will want to see it. Perhaps a
missing WinXP file is causing your problem; perhaps not, but this will help
to eliminate that as a suspect.

Have you visited Windows Update recently? From IE, click Tools | Windows
Update. Be sure that you have downloaded all the critical updates for your
computer. Then click Office Update (on the Windows Update page) to be sure
you have all the Word updates.

The error message you posted doesn't mean much to me, but I hope a real guru
will spot it and jump in with an idea. You might get better results sooner
by posting that, along with the other details, to a Word newsgroup, where
those gurus hang out.
