Lorenzo L.

Hi,

I have a LACIE PCMCIA combo PC card (USB 2.0 & Firewire 400) that I connect
to my Pinnacle Studio Moviebox DV box or to my DV Camera.
Everything works for video capture or for an external hard disk using the
firewire port, but I cannot send a DV back to the camera from any software
(Pinnacle Studio 9, Windows Movie Maker, WinDV, scLive, ...).
If I use another notebook with a firewire port on the motherboard everything
works.
If I install my LACIE combo PC card on this notebook I have the same
problem.
My OS is Windows XP sp1
Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Lorenzo L.

Hello,

I guess the answer is that the card is probably defective or not truly
compatible. I have heard that some of these devices using Texas Instruments
chipset's are not always compatible with Movie Maker.

There is a utility which is very highly regarded called WinDV available
here http://windv.mourek.cz/ It has been known to succeed where Movie Maker
has failed.

I have personally had difficulties with Firewire cards using the TI chipset
and an M-Audio Firewire 410, Cubase and XP. NEC chipset cards work
perfectly. With the TI-based cards, Windows loses connection to the driver
in seconds.

I have found this to be more of a problem with PCMCIA cards, as many of the
USB/Firewire cards seem to use the TI chip. Adaptec makes a 3-port
firewire card (large connector only) that uses the NEC chip.

Hello there,

Well, THANK YOU for confirming that....there have been a couple of others
in windowsxp.moviemaker who tried to imply some time back that I did not
know what I was talking about....Cheers !!!

I already used WinDV without any results.

I think it is a strange problem ...

If I can capture video why I cannot send back it to my camera or my tv ?
Does not it change only the direction of the video flow (IN-OUT) ?
It is not software dipendent. I have the same problem with all video editing
softwares
Why I don't have any problems with an external hard disk ?

What do you mean when you say "truly compatible" ?

Is not Firewire IEEE 1394 a standard interface ?

In Device Manager I can see my Controller Host OHCI compatible IEEE 1394
that use the Microsoft driver.

Could it be a Windows XP problem ?

I have read all the posts and notice I to have the same problem. But I have
notice when you add transitions with a song, it will skip, and the audio
from the footage will speed up. I used that WINDV, and still same error.
I am using a P4 with 1 gig of ram, the Hard drive is 7200rpm. I even tried
different programs to save my move to my (Sony dcr-trv350) camcorder. And
still I get that dizzy, chipmunk sound. What could I do to fix this
related issue?

I don't have an audio problem.
No audio, no video.
What can I do to try to understand where is the problem ?

Hello,

Did you see the message from "Test User" who confirmed the issue with TI
chipsets and your card? Does your card use the Texas Instruments chipset??

Hi,

yes I did, but I have no idea about the chipset of my card because the
datasheet doesn't describe it.
I tried to contact LACIE tech support, but I have no answers at this time.
This is my card : http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10516

However I don't understand why the problem is present only in one direction
from PC to the camera and not viceversa.
And why I don't have any problem if I connect one hard disk to the firewire
interface ?

It seems to be a software problem : Windows XP, IEEE1394 driver, other ... ?

Hello again,

I took a look at your card...the data sheet does not go far enough

However I don't understand why the problem is present only in one
direction
from PC to the camera and not viceversa.
And why I don't have any problem if I connect one hard disk to the
firewire interface?

I guess that it is something along the lines of DirectX being used to
communicate with DV devices and the much different command set/structure
used to pass hard drive commands and data...DiectX has a much more
complicated interface....Hard drives on the other hand have a simple
interface...most of the work being done by the hard drive itself. So, while
I cannot point a finger at any one thing I do see that its a little like
chalk and cheese if you prefer...the only similarity between the two is the
card and cable!!

Have you had the card very long? I'm wondering if there is a chance of
getting an exchange? Do you know anyone else with a similar card (different
manufacturer) I realise that there is not much help with any of the above.

I must say that there is always a chance that the software is defunct. You
should also consider the driver(s) for your card by the way (assuming it
needs one) If it does have a driver...try updating it with the one from the
manufacturer,,,here's why..

I have a rather nice advanced graphics card on one of my machines..It uses
the NVidia chipset but the manufacturer (Gainward) modified things and as a
result you need the "special"£ driver from them and not the Nvidia driver
that comes from Microsoft or NVidia. I allowed Microsoft to do an on-line
update and after the computer re-booted nothing would work right (graphics
wise)...It took a lot of poking around until I discovered what was wrong.
So, if their is a driver get the latest from the card manufacturer.

I do not think there is any more I can help with unless you have some fresh
info that might help

Hi,
I have bought the card about 6 months ago and I used it with an external
hard disk and with usb peripherals.
The problem with getting an exchange is always related to hardware problems.
If the problem is a software problem, as in this case, it is always
difficult to get an hardware exchange (my reseller says : the card is ok, it
works with the hard disk, ... if it doesn't works with video editing
software is a software problem ...)

The card use the native windows IEEE1394 driver, so there is not any driver
available.

Unfortunately I think I will have to search for an other card and to try it
before
buy it.

Thanks for your suggestions

Lorenzo
