Help me change XPpro from 2000 domain to new 2003 domain

I am setting up a new server SBS2003 using new hardrives in our original 2000
server I have to switch off the old server before I power up the new server.
All of the XPpro clients currently log into the 2000 server domain no
problem. What is the easiest way of getting the XPpro clients to log into the
new SBS 2003 domain once it is switched on because they will of course be
looking for the old domain which will no longer exist. Are there things I
should do before switching off the old to save time and agro later. The new
domain name is different and more secure I hope so the settings will be
different. Also I want to keep all the settings on each Client the same for
each user as they have it now so that they dont get all upset on me.
Currently I am using fixed IP addresses on the old system that I want to
keep if possible. ( Do I demote them to workgroup on old system then promote
them to Domain once new system running) What problems am I likely to
encounter?

Thank you but im not sure this helps

I have not really got the option of migrating as this article seems to
illustrate.

Imagine I am taking the client from one building to another and want to use
it on a completely different domain network without losing its user settings
when I log in it is looking for its original domain how can I make it look
for and authenticate itself in the new domain. I have set up user accounts
within the new domain Im just looking for the easiest route to change to
these settings on the client Im sorry if im asking obvious questions but i
have alimited knowledge of this and I am learning all the time

Hi,

In this case, there are a couple of ways for migrating user account. You can
use the File and Setting Transfer Wizard.

How To Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard By Using the Windows XP
CD-ROM

Or just copy the old profiles to the new ones.

But the best way would be to use the User State Migration Tool, which is
described in the following article:

This is brilliant I have learnt so much from you guys, how to keep user
settings ect. Now then the real point of my plea for help is this.

I unplug my XPpro client from 2000 server domain and plug it in to new
domain SBServer 2003 turn it on and get to the login screen its gonna be
looking for the old domain to be authenticated how can I get it to allow me
to log onto the new domain assuming all relevant accounts have been set up on
the new domain I have a feeling I need to do something to it before logging
out of the old domain for the last time such as demoting to a workgroup or
something and the promoting it back to the new domain can any one comment on
this or suggest an alternative, other than the migration that was excellently
suggested and illustrated earlier. Thanks Im still learning!!

Hi,

Unfortunately things do not work this way. I suggest you read the document
from the first post. There is a section about ADMT (Active Directory
Migration Tool), which allows migration of user account and profiles to a
new domain. From my understanding the wizard creates a new registry key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList) for each user and associates it with the new
profile.

Thank you for your help.

I shall go away and digest all this info. My initial problem is as I see it
I cannot have both the Servers running at the same time. So I need to get my
head around how a client that used to log in to a 2000 server can be made to
log into a SBServer 2003 which will have different domain name and login
passwords hmmm not easy for a dimbo like me on first reflection. Thank you
for all your help

You should be able to unplug the computer from the network and log in using
the old username and password, unless you've disabled caching of logons when
a domain controller is not available. Do this, run the USMT/FSTW tool to
capture all the old settings, then join the new domain and run USMT/FSTW to
import the files and settings once logged onto the new domain.
